So, Why Get Married in Spain?
Two answers really, the weather and value for money. The weather in Spain (Nerja) is always very pleasant
from April onwards, getting hotter in the months of July and August. September and October being more bearable (and less
crowded).
When people decide to marry abroad they should expect slight differences to the norm of wedding receptions in Ireland. For
example, in Spain, most venues give a costing which includes a cava reception. Included in this price is usually a
selection of beer, wines, soft drinks and canapés and your wedding meal, plus your Wedding Cake. You will also be
offered the opportunity of giving a free bar to your guests (at a very reasonable rate!!)
In Spain your money goes further and you can treat your guests to a great day and show them you appreciate them making the
journey over... for example a €50 menu is for 3 courses (includes wedding cake, tea, coffee and all wine, local beer,
soft drinks and water during the meal) open bar after - money goes much further. For 80 people €500-€600 is a
good start... the ideal is that no one has to put their hands in their pockets for the entire day, soemthing you simply
can't afford at home normally.
Suppliers, such as photogrpaher, florist, cake, hair, makeup, musicians - good bands, music for church are much cheaper -
some as much as 50% of Irish prices!
Venue
Whichever venue you choose, be assured that your Wedding Day will be planned with professionalism and care so you and your
guests will have lasting memories of a special time with you both. From a Church Wedding to the exchanging of vows on the
beach, whether you choose a casual style reception in a restaurant or a sumptuous meal in an hotel, the choice is yours.
My favourite location is Nerja, a beautiful fishing town on the East Coast of Spain with all the feelings of a small Village, with its cobbled streets and
easygoing way of life, fishermen mending their nets on the beaches, locals out shopping, children going to school, yet
geographically located close to Malaga Airport (approx 50 mins by bus) and many places of interest to visit..
Planning
So how do I know who is planning my Wedding in Spain? Sonya is a Meath girl, who got married in Nerja in 2005, she and her husband decided to stay and set up home there and
never looked back! To this day, she uses most of the vendors whom she hired herself for her Wedding, and so has a great
rapport and working relationship with them. I also had the pleasure of working with Sonja and going to the various Venues
that we recommend for Wedding Receptions in Nerja and surrounding areas and meeting some of the vendors.
All the paper work, booking of Venue, flowers, cake, music etc will be taken care of for you.
Budget
Every couple getting married must face the fact that a budget must be drawn up. One of the advantages of getting married in
any of the locations I have chosen is that the couple decide how much they want to spend (travel and accommodation costing
etc to be done separately) and after going through the various menus etc then they choose what is suitable for their
pocket.
Guidelines to Rules for getting married in Spain
How to get legally married in Spain / Have a blessing in a Spanish Church
For Catholic Weddings
- It must be through the Catholic Church
- At least one of you must be Catholic.
- If one is divorced (and at least one is Catholic) - it depends - you can have the ceremony / blessing in the Catholic
Church if the person who is divorced was previously married in a registry (Civil) BUT, if the person was previously married
in a Catholic Church - apart from getting a divorce - you will need an annulment.(proof of)
- Your own parish priest should know the paperwork involved - same as if you were marrying in a Catholic church at home
in Ireland - so please check.
- If neither of you are Catholic but would still like to have a ceremony in Spain - it can be arranged. You would have
to marry in a registry office in the UK / Ireland / Gibraltar - bring proof that you are married to Spain and have a
blessing in hotel grounds, on a beach, on a terrace over looking the sea etc. A blessing ceremony would entail all the
details of a wedding ceremony and in some cases couples do not tell their guests and they don't know any different!!!!
